Mail Bag is back on TDH where I’m answering some of the pressing questions that have found there way into my Inbox and DM’s.

Apologies if I haven’t been able to answer everything but there have been some queries that have already been addressed on previous Mail Bag’s so please feel free to check out No.1 and No.2.

Enjoy!

Al Hassan asks - “What do you pack when you want to pack light? Like a 4-5 day trip in a carry on?”

I am the WORST person to ask this advice from mainly because often when I’m travelling I’m travelling with camera gear so that immediately rules out any form of carry on clothing. Always check in luggage which frankly is a drain, but always means I can pack for any eventuality, which is also a drain because I then tend to overpack and not wear half the items I’ve stuffed in there. First world problems.

BUT I did have a trip recently where I wasn’t travelling for work and was finally able to try this. Genuinely, was so excited but also pissed that I didn’t get my usual sweet 23kg.

First things first, it’ll depend on the weather. This mainly dictates whether I’m needing to bring an overcoat or not OR if I try and layer a lot and thus able to bring more garms. I usually opt for the latter and so this is what I would aim to pack/wear:-

  • Barbour jacket, denim chore coat or LEJ Plage coat.

  • Some form of sport coat/blazer. I want this to be as versatile as possible; being able to wear it during the day casually and also having it serve double duty in the evenings if I’m going anywhere for a drink or fancy. One of my Anthology jackets does the trick.

  • My Carharrt WIP double knees and a pair of Levi’s 568 jeans. The WIP’s are stone coloured and go with pretty much any top half outfit and jeans are jeans. ‘Nuff said.

  • 2-3 shirts. I don’t tend to wear things like t-shirts and polos often as I don’t find them as multi-purposed as shirts. The ones I’ll pack are often my black denim Rubato western, my Buck Mason chambray CPO shirt and one of my Wythe flannels.

  • 2 vests. I like having the little bit of white poking out and they also act as a second layer if the weather’s a bit chillier.

  • One sweater; either my bright red shaggy dog from Jamieson’s or my grey cable knit shaggy dog from Drake’s.

  • I’ll always take my black cordovan Alden penny loafers and then, weather depending, either some boots or a pair of Vans-esque plimsols.

  • Accessories are fairly self explanatory right? Belts, a baseball cap, watch, rings etc.

And that’s about it.
